6 year old Bridger Walker from Wyoming protected his 4 year old sister during a dangerous moment when a German Shepherd mix suddenly charged toward them at a friend’s home on July 9, 2020.
As the dog ran toward the children, Bridger quickly stepped in front of his sister. He chose to put himself between her and the animal so she could escape to safety.
The dog attacked him and caused serious injuries to his face and head. Even after being bitten repeatedly, he managed to grab his sister’s hand and run with her to a safer area before collapsing.
He later underwent surgery that lasted nearly two hours and received more than 90 stitches. His recovery at home was long, but his sister was unharmed.
When asked why he did it, Bridger said he thought that if someone had to be hurt, it should be him instead of his sister. His words and actions touched people around the world and were widely shared as an example of bravery and love between siblings.
Today
Bridger Walker is now an 11-year-old middle schooler who is doing incredibly well, thriving physically and emotionally, and embracing life as a “normal boy”. Following his heroic actions on July 9, 2020—where he famously stated, “If someone had to die, I thought it should be me”—his family chose a path of grace rather than anger, completely forgiving the dog’s owners.
The years following the incident have brought remarkable healing, unique honors, and new milestones for the Walker family:
Near-Complete Physical Healing
- Advanced Laser Treatments: Bridger originally required 90 stitches and faced severe facial scarring. World-renowned dermatologist Dr. Dhaval Bhanusali and Utah-based Dr. Cory Maughan provided advanced laser treatments completely free of charge. Thanks to these procedures, his scars are now barely noticeable.
- A Restored Smile: His father, Robert Walker, noted that the family’s biggest initial worry was whether Bridger would ever be able to smile normally again. Today, his full, bright smile has completely returned

Life and Hobbies Today
- Active Sports and Martial Arts: Channeling his courage into positive outlets, Bridger actively trains in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, and boxing. He also plays competitive soccer, heading up the defense for an undefeated local team.
- The Unbreakable Sibling Bond: Bridger and his younger sister, Brielle, remain exceptionally close. Bridger still adores animals and sleeps every night with his beloved dog, Cyborg.
- A Rock Collection Museum: After people from all over the world sent him rocks to honor his bravery, Bridger amassed a massive collection. A museum exhibit was eventually established in Laramie, Wyoming, to house and display them.
Lasting Global Impact and Initiatives
- “You Can Be a Hero” Children’s Book: The Walker family wrote and published a children’s book titled You Can Be a Hero. Written from Brielle’s perspective, the book focuses on teaching children that being a hero is about everyday kindness rather than superpowers.
- WBC “Bridgerweight” Division: In a permanent tribute to his bravery, the World Boxing Council (WBC) created an entirely new weight class between Cruiserweight and Heavyweight, officially naming it the “Bridgerweight” division.
- Global Travel and Public Speaking: Over the last few years, Bridger and his parents have traveled to countries like Thailand, Germany, Mexico, and the UAE. The family continues to give school presentations and keynote speeches at safety conferences.
Despite the global fame—including a promised Captain America shield from Chris Evans and a personal invite from Tom Holland to the Spider-Man movie set—his parents share that Bridger remains completely humble, focused on his sixth-grade classes, history, and gym
